“Stare”

High up in the mountains of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda lies the home of the endangered mountain gorilla. This was the first gorilla I saw on my trek, an enormous silver back. He seemed amused by me sliding down the muddy slope, just barely coming to a stop before him. I scooted back from him as he continued to stare at me.

Super Tuskers

It is estimated that perhaps less than 24 Super Tuskers remain alive today, spread between the Tsavo-Amboseli eco-system in South East Kenya. Their tusks weigh more than 100 pounds per side.

Elephant tusks are enlarged incisor teeth that show up around the age of two and continue to grow throughout the elephant’s life span of 60 to 70 years.

When I took this image of Craig (on left) at the end of 2023 he was 51 years old.

Craig was a peaceful icon of Africa, passing away from natural causes in January, 2026.
