The Thrill of Safari
If I had to choose only one trip in the world, it would be to go on safari in Africa. What is it about an African safari that draws me in so completely? There are so many amazing places that I have been fortunate to explore in the world but Africa is my favorite.
I remember our first safari, flying from Nairobi to Masai Mara in the our small prop plane, looking out the window as we approached the dirt runway and seeing zebra looking up at me. I was completely captured in that instant.
So, what is it that is so captivating? I have thought a lot about that question. I think the answer is the adventure, the discovery of some amazing creature with every mile traveled in the Land Cruiser. Mother Nature unfolds before you and surprises you. Then our guide stops the Land Cruiser, turns off the engine and I watch in wonder.
The wildlife is breathtaking yet fragile in its existence. So many species are threatened with extinction. I am most keenly aware of the fragility of nature while in Africa. Tourism in Africa adds to the protection of its wildlife and to the economy of its people. The Pandemic with the absence of tourism and safaris threatened both the welfare of the wildlife and the people.
I hope, as the Pandemic recedes, to return to Africa, camera in hand to capture more of its magic and to let myself be captured by the magic of Africa.
