“Memories of Paris Series”

1945
My parents met in 1945 in Paris and were married in the American Cathedral. They were both serving in the Army during WWII and were stationed in Paris. I was born shortly after my parents returned to America. During my childhood I heard many stories about their time in Paris.
And so my fascination with Paris began.

1993
In 1983 we went to Paris with our son, Nat who was 6 years old at the time, to visit our very good friends, Yan & Joan and their children when they lived there on Quai d’Anjou. We returned ten years later with both our sons. to share the magic of Paris with them. Here I am with Elliott and Nat by the Seine on Quai d’Anjou.
And so, this series is especially close to my heart.

2017
Each image in my ‘Memories of Paris’ series is from my last trip to Paris in 2017, when my husband and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary, staying on Quai d’Anjou on Ile Saint-Louis for a week. We went to places we had been before plus new ones.
The memories of this trip were made richer by our previous visits. It was our fifth trip to Paris.

The Process
The photographs are all post-processed in the same style, giving them each a unique “ ink pen line & watercolor wash” look.
The process I used to create the images in this series involved blending many filtered layers in Photoshop (and a lot of trial and error) to arrive at the finished image you find in this series.
Stories Behind the Images
-

Quai d'Anjou
We stayed in the apartment behind the middle tree, on the second floor. At night we watched the lights of the Bateau Mouche kaleidoscope across our ceiling as it went along the Seine outside our window.
-

American Cathedral
This is the church where my parents (both in the US Army during WWII) married on a summer morning in June, 1945. I was born a year later, shortly after they returned to America. When I visited the cathedral in 2017 and told the people working in the cathedral my story, they said, “Welcome home.”
-

Notre Dame on a Summer's Eve
After a full day of exploring Paris, we’d walk by Notre Dame each evening, cross Pont Saint-Louis and return to our apartment on Quai d’Anjou.
-

Jardin du Palais Royal
I took advantage of experimenting with color in this image while I was processing it in Photoshop. After trying out many color paletes, I settled with the one you see here. Keys for me in every photograph I make is composition and color.
-

Eiffel Abstract
It was raining the day we visited the Eiffel Tower. While standing underneath, trying to keep dry, I looked up and saw this beautiful perspective of the Tower. This image is processed a bit differently than the others in this series with the strong texture overlay. The sky was a dull grey and I felt like the image would benefit from a texture layer added.
-

Boulangerie
This was taken in the Marais neighborhood. Look closely and you will see our reflection in the window.
-

Bicyclette
This image was also taken in the Marais neighborhood. This scene with colors of the bike and balloons with the shop’s pink curtained window in the background was something I just couldn’t pass by without capturing it with my camera.
-

Place des Voges
After a long day of walking in Paris, we stopped here to rest in the shade in a quiet part of the Marais district.
