the Southeast Asia Series

From Photograph to Painted Photograph

  • Monks in orange robes walking in a line outside, surrounded by greenery and flowers.

    Original Photograph

This phogograph was taken in Luang Prabang, Laos before sunrise as the monks walked through the town asking for alms (food offerings). There were very young monks in the group and they were always accompanied by dogs. I would rise early in the morning and follow them with my camera. The town was quiet and people knelt outside their homes with cooked rice and fruit. As the monks received their alms they quietly chanted blessings to the townspeople. It is one of my favorite memories of my trip to Southeast Asia.

    Painted Photograph

And here is that same photograph after I added many layers of of digital painting and layers of texture. Then I used different blending modes to combine them as well as various digital brushes to add or remove portions of the layers to reveal or conceal what was beneath each one.

The monastery in Luang Prabang had many very young monks who were always accompanied by the dogs and puppies who lived at the monastery with them. One of my favorite memories of being there was photographing them.
